My Confession

I have a confession to make. Though I know that this may destroy the image of myself that I've carefully cultivated over the years as the rough, gruff Texan man, I have to admit that one of my favorite films is "A Room With a View". This E.M. Forster novel adaptation was released in the '80's, and I can't remember how I first watched it, probably on video or cable at my parent's house when I was in junior high. My parents and my sister loved it, and something about it appealed to me; perhaps the beautiful opera music of Puccini, the Victorian values coming into conflict with George and his father's Nietzsche-cum-Rousseau takes on life, the gorgeous production design or simply Daniel Day-Lewis' rendering of the upper-class twit Cecil all conspired to enchant my senses and imagination.

Anyway, I know almost every line to the movie, and I can watch it over and over and over. I attribute it to the beginnings of my appreciation for opera music and period dramas. I even traced my way around Florence remembering shots and scenes from the movie when I travelled through Italy in the spring of 1994 when I was studying in Aix-en-Provence.

Edie says it's a little inexplicable to my character yet very interesting. I think it's more to do with my upbringing under my sister and mother. Anyway, here's a photo of my fraternity pledge brothers and I from the spring of 1992. See, there I am in the center, what a macho guy.
